Rider profile: Michele Berendsen
Michele Berendsen uses three modes of transportation most days, and none of them are a car. She walks a short distance to the bus stop each morning, rides the bus to work on campus, and then bikes home. She notes that she often gets downtown on her bicycle faster than some of the cars traveling the same route.
Whether on her bike or the bus, Michele enjoys the freedom and flexibility of using alternate transportation. “The frustration level is so much less than driving,” she says. “I have lots of friends who do the same thing, so it’s kind of a community.”
How long have you been riding the bus?
I was self-employed for years and would ride back and forth to meetings, as time allowed. Since I started working at the Lied Center, I ride daily.
Where do you ride?
Generally, I ride to work with my bike and then bike home. I will continue this through the winter, but if the weather is bad, I’ll ride the bus home. I also ride the bus to main campus from the Lied Center, during the day, for meetings or to have lunch with friends. Friends from main campus also ride the bus out to the Lied to have lunch with me.
Which bus routes do you ride? How often?
Bus #11 is my daily ride and I can ride #11, #41 or #43 to get to and from campus.
What is one item you always bring with you on the bus?
I always bring my cell phone on the bus. I work, text and catch up on Facebook on the bus. Things you can’t do if you are driving.
What is your favorite thing about riding the bus?
I LOVE not driving and like to people watch.
How do you benefit from using public transportation?
- Money: I ride for free. I don’t make a car payment or pay insurance. It is important to note that I do have access to a car. I have a vehicle from a friend who works out of the country and use another friend’s car, as needed. But, I can go two weeks without driving. I think I paid $25 in gas in the last two months. I also save money because I don’t have to buy a parking pass for KU.
- Health: I ride my bike and walk more since I ride the bus.
- Environment: I help the environment by not driving every day.
- Time: I can work and respond to e-mails on the bus. Can’t do that in a car.
