Batteries included
The three hybrid buses in the city’s fleet recently gained an extra layer of graphic detail. On both sides of each bus, a phrase was added to call attention to the energy saving features of the hybrids. It reads: “This bus runs on batteries (batteries included).” The word “hybrid” was also added to the buses.
“We want to remind people that they are riding in the first hybrid buses in Kansas,” said Robert Nugent, public transit administrator. “This is just a fun way to call out that fact. It’s also a way to reach out to those who have not been on the buses yet. Maybe they will think about trying public transportation.”
The hybrid buses run primarily on Route 11, operated jointly by the city and the university, which serves downtown, campus, and 31st and Iowa. They have been in operation since August and have performed very well.
“They are much quieter, produce about 90 percent fewer emissions and use 50 percent less fuel than the diesel buses they replaced,” said Nugent. “We hope people will take note of the benefits of public transportation in general, and hybrid vehicles more specifically, and give the buses a try.”
