Wilma Gates loves the independence of riding the bus in Lawrence.

As a resident of Vermont Towers, a senior living facility in Lawrence, Wilma attended a Lawrence Transit travel training in 2017 that included a presentation on how to ride the bus and a bus ride on Route 11.

Since then she has taken the initiative to learn other routes that get her where she needs to go.

“The only way to learn how to ride the bus is to get on it and learn the routes,” Gates said. “I like to ride the bus to Wal-Mart and sometimes to Dillons. If I want to go, I don’t have to ask anyone for a ride. I can go whenever I want.”

Wilma takes Route 7 to get to her to her shopping trips, then she likes to take Route 11 on the way home.

“The trees are so pretty on the KU campus,” Gates said. “I like to take Route 11 back from shopping since the view is so nice.”

Next spring, Lawrence Transit will be having another travel training at Vermont Towers. Wilma looks forward to helping her friends and fellow residents learn how the bus can work for them too.

Thank you, Wilma!
